Our client is looking for a Business Manager to run the day-to-day operations of the association. They are a non-profit, consumer-owned water utility incorporated in 1969. They distribute drinking and domestic water to landowners in the vicinity of Ames Lake. They serve about 1200 members.

As the Business Manager, you will own all the day to day operations of the office including the financials, payroll, billings, and the relationships with the banks. This includes ensuring successful processing of monthly billing invoices. You will ensure member payments are received and accurately recorded. You will process membership transfers and requests. You will work with new members to onboard them into the Association. You will be responsible for pulling the financial information together to report back to the Board. You will also attend the monthly board meetings to report on the health of the association.  You have 1 person on your team that will assist you in the administrative functions.

Fast forward a year, what will you be doing?

You have a great relationship with the members as well as the Board. The member billing and management is running smoothly. The financials are accurately reported, and the cash flow analysis and forecasting are aligned. Your annual budget is complete and are compared to the actual performance. You have completed a formal audit. The banking requirements, activities and reconciliations are correct. You know the specifics of all the numbers to successfully tell and paint the picture of the health of the association. You are respected and liked by the members and the team. You have positively impacted the business and culture. You are aligned with the Board. The Board respects you. You are happy.

How will you get there?

30 days:

  • You will meet the Board President and start to work with him on the deliverables

  • You will shadow the current Business Manager

  • You will meet the Board

  • Attend the 1st board meeting

  • Drive across the entire water system

60 days:

  • You are getting immersed in the day to day of the business

  • You understand the business operations

  • You understand the financials

 90 days:

  • You know the community and their members

  • Good relationships have developed with the team, Board & members

  • You are running the Board meetings with the Board President

What you will need:

  • Strong financial background, principals of accounting

  • Experience working with Small Businesses

  • Expert at QuickBooks, Excel, PowerPoint

  • Strong management skills including goal setting, strategic planning and mentoring

  • Exceptional written and verbal skills

  • Excellent decision making and problem-solving skills

Our client is a Group A water system. They produce around 90,000,000 gallons of water a year from a deep, groundwater production well. They Association maintains over 202,000 feet, or 38 miles, of pipe and 6 storage tanks with a combined capacity of slightly over 1 million gallons. They are comprised of 7 Board Members & 3 additional people on staff. This includes a certified Water Operator who maintains the water system.
